Chadwick Boseman. A name known and loved by thousands of people across the world. Chadwick Boseman’s work changed the lives of so many, and he had a huge impact on the Black Community. He portrayed Black icons Jackie Robinson, James Brown, and Thurgood Marshall. He also brought the character of T’Challa to life in Marvel’s Black Panther. He had the strength to show up for those who looked up to him, all while fighting an unseen illness.
Sadly, Boseman passed away on August 28th, 2020, after a four year long battle with colon cancer. He was 43. He may be gone, but his legacy will live on forever.
Many members of the Black Community have expressed their grief through social media, and their hope that Boseman knew the true impact he had on them as a people when he took the role of T’Challa in Black Panther. Black people who weren’t even Marvel fans flocked to the theaters to see a young Black man portray such an iconic role. So many Black people across the world went to see Black Panther because it made them feel seen. Boseman made them feel seen. He was the T’Challa they needed. He
embodied the character with such poise and grace. He gave them hope.
A quote of his that stands out, now especially, reads: “You have to cherish things in a different way when you know the clock is ticking, you are under pressure.” Boseman knew that his clock was ticking. He gave his all to the role of T’Challa. He knew the enormous amount of pressure he was under, and he delivered. He did it for the people.
Chadwick Boseman was an icon to all, and he will truly be missed. Rest in peace.
