Skyline Drive is a 105-mile drive through the Virginia portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Skyline Drive has 71 overlooks that provide views of the Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont with access to numerous Appalachian trails, resorts and campgrounds. Part of Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive twists and turns through the mountains and reaches an elevation of over 10,000 feet. The speed limit is 35 mph due to elevation and wildlife. Bears, deer and bobcats are often seen crossing the road. The famous Appalachian Trail crosses Skyline Drive in several places.
The Appalachian Trail is historically and culturally significant land traversing over a 1,000 miles of mountain terrain. Over a hundred miles of the Appalachian Trail is accessible from Skyline Drive. These trails are open to walkers and hikers but closed to bikers and horseback riders. There are portions of trails that are just over 2 miles making them great for families. Those that want to go horseback riding can choose from several ranches that offer guided horseback tours in the Shenandoah Valley.
Luray Caverns is a must for everyone! The largest array of caverns on the East Coast, this popular attraction has a lot to offer in one location. Luray Caverns itself is well lit and paved. It features 10 story high ceilings, crystal clear ponds and the world’s only Stalacpipe Organ. Other attractions include the Car and Carriage Caravan Museum, Toy Town Junction, Rope Adventure Park, and Garden Maze.
