With the calendar rolling into November, we’re already onto the next big holiday seasons — Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Now, I love Christmas music, but I still get sick of hearing “Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer,” or “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” over and over again.
Thankfully, Sia’s here to save us with some brand new holiday songs on her album “Everyday Is Christmas.”
The first single, “Santa’s Coming For Us” is sweet as a candy cane dipped in peppermint frosting. This track oozes holiday charm that will have you falling in love with Sia’s style all over again, if you let it.
She’s done a fine job of tapping into that feeling you get when you’re sitting under the Christmas tree opening presents, or hanging lights and reindeer lawn ornaments up around your house. If this song were a piece of clothing it’d be a bright red and green sweater with lots of glitter.
If there’s anything critical to say about this song, it’s that the connotation in the chorus could get construed the wrong way. “Santa’s Coming For Us,” but why? What did we do? Where is he going to take us? Are we going to be safe? It’s a title that Tim Burton could use for a “Nightmare Before Christmas” sequel.
Take a listen to the song, though and you’ll find one must try real hard to interpret the chorus in that dark way. With the way she sings it, combined with the cheerful beat, you’re not likely to find anything but joy and goodwill — something we all could use a lot more of this time of year.
“Everyday Is Christmas” drops on Nov. 17.
