“MotorSport”, the first single off the group’s upcoming album “Culture 2” hits you raw, even if it takes some time to heat up.
That’s because the intro and opening chorus are just a step below Cardi B’s tight lyrical mosaic she paints with ease before rolling into Minaj’s decent, if confusing, output.
The guys’ rhymes work to keep the tune motoring along. It’s just that when Cardi B’s lyrical fangs come out, the song moves from a decent listen to a memorable one.
After listening to her rhymes, you’ll recognize why Cardi B isn’t a chick you should mess with, if you know what’s good for you, at least.
While Minaj’s verse doesn’t take anything away from the track, it just has some odd things going on. For example, are young people really going to know who Lucy and Ricky (From the 1950s sitcom “I Love Lucy.”) are? Also, rhyming “Potty” with “Saudi” might have seemed like a fresh idea, but in practice it’s just weird to me. What do the two have in common?
That issue hints at the small overarching problem I had with the entire track. There isn’t one idea that ties all the lyrics together. It’s a mish-mash of phrase turns that don’t feel as cohesive as they could have been.
Still, though, the beat will have you bumping on the dance floor and the lyrical flow will make you feel the rhythm pop all the same.
In conclusion, this track does a decent job at whetting your appetite for the rest of the album, even though it may not come out as soon as was originally anticipated. That’s due to Quavo revealing on Instagram Live last month that he lost a hard drive with tracks from the album on it. He also, however, assured fans that the album would still be coming out soon.
